• Informal homes evolve in 4 stages, increasing emissions as construction progresses. • Informal housing emits 450% more GHG per person than formal housing in Lima. • Selective deconstruction can cut carbon emissions by 81% versus landfilling. • Recycling cuts GHG emissions by 69% compared to landfilling in informal housing. • Selective deconstruction cuts water use by 82% and fossil energy by 80% vs. landfilling.
