Abstract

Elite philanthropy has played an influential role in global capitalism and economic development since the mid-twentieth century. This entry explores its evolution around the interests of capital, manifested in contemporary philanthrocapitalism, a distinct form of elite philanthropy linked with profit-making and entangled with financial actors, methods, and logics. This financialization of philanthropy is explored, with its mechanisms steering global development in directions that support continued capitalist accumulation and aim to shape market behaviour. This calls for further research on these processes, and the reassertion of citizen agency and resistance to these new forms of financial subjectification.
