SUMMARYThere was no significant difference between honey yields from hives (in rows) which faced in the same direction and hives (in rows) which faced in different directions. The end colonies in rows of hives which faced in the same direction gained more bees and produced more honey than the centre colonies, but they required frequent attention during the active season. Drifting was significantly greater along than between rows. Drifting also occurred from the back row to the front when two rows were placed near windbreaks, but there was no significant difference between the honey yields of the two rows.Drifting can be decreased in apiaries consisting of rows of hives by (1) spacing hives at least 9 m. apart, (2) spacing rows at least 18 m. apart, (3) facing hives in different directions, (4) placing coloured boards above entrances, and by a combination of (3) and (4).
