Abstract

‘Artemisia’ is the first major monographic exhibition dedicated to the work of Artemisia Gentileschi to be held in the UK, almost 400 years after her initial visit to London in 1638 on the invitation of Charles I.1 The exhibition has been curated to reflect that the works, in Artemisia’s own words, ‘will speak for themselves’ (quoted in Treves, 2020), thereby enabling the elevation of the public perception of the artist through the work she produced over the forty-five years she was actively painting in Europe.
