The human microbiome is a highly diverse and dynamic community of microbes composed of bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi and other eukaryotes. 1 These organisms exist as complex communities across multiple external human body sites including the skin, lung, gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts. [1][2]2][3] With growing evidence for the microbiome's role in disease, research has moved beyond association studies that link compositional changes to specific diseases and health presentations, towards mechanistic investigations that connect specific microbes or functional states to causal mechanism and clinical outcomes. 4,5This knowledge provides a crucial foundation to support the design and development of targeted microbiome-based interventions to improve health (Fig. 1).
