Abstract Norm translation research originated in the analysis of gender equality norms, focusing on their interconnected development in institutions of global governance and societies worldwide. As gender norms are context specific and contested, their translation from one context into another depends on diverse sets of actors, whereas the work of transnational women’s rights advocates is particularly relevant. Because of its interest in socially rooted normative ideas and practices, norm translation research has contributed to decentring norm diffusion research and its assumption of intergovernmental spaces as starting point of global norms, and it has done so by creating an interdisciplinary framework of analysis drawing on sociology, anthropology, and transnational and post-colonial feminism. After presenting the conceptual tenets of the approach, the chapter applies its analytical lens to one dynamic of transnational normative change: the global formation of an anti-child marriage norm vis-à-vis the legal abolition of child marriage in Trinidad and Tobago.
