In situ TEM uncovers dynamic Ni@NiO core–shell nanostructures emerging on Ni/AC during CO 2 methanation. The NiO shell activates CO 2 while the Ni 0 core splits H 2 , coupling intermediates to deliver a high CH 4 yield.
