The Omitted Variable is an essay arguing that every system that has ever existed — biological, economic, ecological, institutional — runs on the same three-term equation, and that the term governing decay has been structurally absent from every dominant measurement framework simultaneously. The essay traces that omission from global collapse horizons down to the individual nervous system, proposes that consciousness itself is the regulatory interface evolved to detect this imbalance, and presents a measurement framework — Contributionism — as the instrument required to correct it. It moves from mathematics to neuroscience to history to institutional design, and arrives at a concrete first demonstration: Portland, a public dashboard, a score that cannot be hidden
