Abstract

This study employs a read-across approach, generating similarity-based hypotheses to predict the removal efficiency of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) during the recycling of plastic film waste. The objective was to estimate VOC emissions under various recycling conditions by developing six local hypotheses and one global hypothesis. The predictive performance of read-across varied across different hypotheses, with Q² F1 values ranging from 0.65 to 0.90, indicating differences in prediction reliability across plastic types and temperature conditions. The global hypothesis, which integrates all plastic types and temperatures, achieved a Q² F1 of 0.75 using the Euclidean Distance (ED) similarity function, indicating balanced predictive performance across diverse recycling scenarios. This study demonstrates the potential of the read-across approach to predict VOC emissions efficiently without experimental data. By identifying significant molecular features and leveraging similarity-based hypotheses, the findings contribute to sustainable recycling strategies and support the development of a circular economy in the plastics industry.
