Gaoligong Mountains function as a crucial area for fungal diversity and are an important biodiversity hotspot. One new species, Ophiocordyceps polystromata, within the family Ophiocordycipitaceae, parasitizing lepidopteran larvae, was found in the Gaoligong Mountains in western Yunnan, China. It is distinguished from related and similar species based on morphological and multi-gene phylogenetic evidence. Morphologically, O. polystromata is characterized by numerous, fibrous, cylindrical, curved stromata emerging from the host body, as well as having superficial perithecia, filiform asci and ascospores. Phylogenetically, O. polystromata belongs to the Hirsutella guyana lineage, and is sister to O. crinalis, with strong support. The new species is described and illustrated in this study.
