Abstract

This is the introduction to the first publication of Sir (Tā) Tipene O’Regan’s lectures on the Ngāi Tahu Claim (Te Kerēme), delivered in late 1998 as that settlement came onstream legally with the New Zealand Crown. The essay seeks to put into historical context these vital developments for the future of the main tribe of New Zealand’s South Island (Te Waipounamu) and of Aotearoa New Zealand itself.
