The fishes of Chondrostei are of key importance for evolutionary biology research due to their distinctive phylogenetic positions, characteristic morphological traits, and geographical distributions, and yet few species have chromosome-level reference genomes. To bridge this gap, we propose to initiate the Chondrostei Genome Project (CGP), an international and interdisciplinary cooperation that conducts whole-genome sequencing for all sturgeons and paddlefishes and aims at studying the evolution of Chondrostean fishes on the topics of speciation, diversification, and adaptive evolution. We envision that CGP will provide megabase-scale genomic data of Chondrostean fishes and also lay a solid foundation for prospective conservation research. With current worldwide collaborators, we hereby also extend our most genuine invitation for your participation in the CGP and contribute your expertise in this timely research.
