The publication of García Canclini's Hybrid Cultures: Strategies for Entering and Leaving Modernity in 1990 was a turning point in the way the social sciences, humanities, and cultural studies analysed the sphere of culture in Latin America. This book promoted research, reflection, and debate on cultural issues from a novel perspective, challenging several of the conceptual convictions established in the academic research, and paved the way for a new stage of scientific and academic production with a focus on Latin America in particular and the Global South in general. My purpose is to evaluate and recuperate his contribution to cultural research over the past three decades, emphasising the pivotal aspects of his legacy on how to understand modernity beyond Europe and English-speaking North America, the articulation of culture and power, the redefinition of the popular and the subaltern, and the implications of ongoing technological innovation in symbolic markets on culture.
