Australian freight and logistics (F&L) transportation contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. However, the industrial adoption of zero-emission trucks (ZETs) is still in its infancy nationwide in the long-haul freight transport sector. Drawing on the socio-technical transitions theory (STTT) and multi-level perspective (MLP), this article aims to understand factors at the niche innovation levels to determine their effect on the decarbonisation of long-haul freight (business-to-business distribution) within the Australian F&L sector. This article analyses the perspectives of industrial stakeholders (truck manufacturers and long-haul transporters) on the issue of ZET adoption and the diffusion of this low-carbon technology within the country, gathered through semi-structured interviews. The article concludes by highlighting the pivotal role that policies at the regime level play in influencing the business stakeholders’ confidence in the ZET policies, thus impacting the future acceptance of sustainable road freight technology in Australia.
