Regional Differences in Cranberry Propagation Practices and Disease Risks: Insights from a Survey of Growers in North America

Abstract

Cranberry ( Vaccinium macrocarpon) is propagated vegetatively, with cuttings from existing beds used to establish new plantings. This method is cost-effective and ensures genetic consistency, but there are no standardized protocols to assess the health of cuttings before planting. Several cranberry pathogens, including cranberry fruit rot–associated fungi, cranberry false blossom phytoplasma, and viruses, have asymptomatic (latent) phases, increasing the risk of their transmission through infected cuttings. Additionally, there is little documentation of bed establishment practices across the diverse geographic regions in which cranberries are grown. This study investigated cranberry grower practices related to propagative material acquisition, storage, and bed establishment, with a focus on disease presence and concerns. A two-part survey approach was conducted: (i) a live poll during the 2023 and 2024 Wisconsin Cranberry School meetings and (ii) a web-based survey distributed to cranberry industry professionals across major production regions in North America ( n = 94). The results indicate that the Northwest region, which has the smallest cranberry acreage, faces fewer challenges in bed establishment and reports fewer disease observations during the first 3 years after bed establishment compared with the Midwest and Northeast. Despite regional differences, most growers express concerns about pathogen transmission through vegetative plant material, indicating a shared industry-wide issue. These findings underscore the need for further research on disease transmission risks in cranberry propagation and the benefits of documenting and educating on management practices across regions. Addressing these gaps could improve disease management strategies and enhance the long-term sustainability of cranberry production.
