The 2024 elections in Solomon Islands received an unusual amount of international attention, much of it focused on China. The elections were unusual in a range of ways: parties appeared to become more important, a previous trend of falling candidate numbers came to an abrupt end, and incumbent re-election rates fell. In other ways, the elections were typical by Solomon Islands standards: electoral quality was quite high, electoral politics remained gendered, and the sitting prime minister going into the election was no longer prime minister afterwards. In this article I describe the lead up to the elections, including the international attention. I also detail electoral quality, key features of electoral competition, and the aftermath of the elections.
