The Universe 25 experiment is commonly interpreted as evidence of social collapse driven by abundance, overcrowding, and behavioral pathology.This article advances a different reading. The central failure observed in Universe 25 was not the disappearance of rewards, but the breakdown of circulation—a growing divergence between visible payoff and realizable access. Expected rewards remained high and salient, while the effort and cost required to obtain them became effectively infinite for most individuals. Under such conditions, withdrawal from social participation is not best understood as despair or degeneration. It is a rational response to a system in which outcomes remain desirable, yet structurally unreachable, and where others are visibly enjoying those outcomes in real time. Participation declines not because rewards vanish, but because hope collapses as an expectation. This reinterpretation serves as a bridge between micro-level behavioral response and macro-level circulation failure frameworks.
