Summary In this article we present the Dutch eco‐scheme as an example of a results‐based scheme which fits well into the ‘new delivery model’ of the CAP 2023–2027. Implemented in 2023, the scheme offers farmers a menu of 22 eco‐activities, from which they can choose every year. Uptake exceeds expectations and comprises approximately 2/3 of the total utilised agricultural area. The points and medal system, with multiple eco‐objectives (5 combinations), minimum thresholds, regional differences and differentiated payments is relatively complex compared to how other MSs have implemented the CAP eco‐schemes. However, partly due to EU legislation around compensation rules, the system now contains a hybrid form, in which the maximum possible cost‐effectiveness will not yet be realised (implicit prices for eco‐points differ over activities due to the calculated income forgone and cost incurred of a particular eco‐activity).
