Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived by students as being difficult.However, when they see how math and music are intimately related, their attitude often changes.Some of the most fundamental aspects of music are described by math.For example, the reactions to consonance and dissonance are related to the relative ratios of the notes in a chord or note sequence in a piece.Students' difficulties with math concepts and applications can be ameliorated with motivation and practical exercises.The motivation can arise with a familiar application such as music, and the exercises provide practice at connecting the concepts with their practical use.This paper suggests ways to implement the use of music in courses involving mathematics and provides numerous examples to accomplish the learning goals.Some of the math topics include, fractions, modular arithmetic, exponents and logarithms, waves and oscillations.The connection between music and math forms the basis for creating instruments that play the music.I will suggest ways to present these concepts to students for their greater appreciation of music and math.
