Abstract

This paper establishes a general structural condition governing the persistence of complexsystems. We show that a system remains viable if and only if its long-run aggregate inflowof capacity meets or exceeds its aggregate outflow adjusted for disturbance. The resultapplies independently of domain, including ecological, financial, biological, and institutionalsystems.
