A newly discovered species of the paleotropical woody bamboo subtribe Bambusinae (Poaceae, Bambusoideae), Cochinchinochloa salta V.T. Tran, from coastal areas of Phu Yen Province, South-Central Vietnam, is described and illustrated. Based on vegetative and reproductive characters, Cochinchinochloa salta shares characters with Cochinchinochloa braiana , but differs from it by having nodes of leafy branches with a thin swollen patella, bud elliptic, the culm leaf blade base slightly protruding, auricles curved and small, and nucoid caryopsis oblique with a relatively thick pericarp.
