This study explores how the r/TaylorSwift subreddit fosters informal language learning, cultural engagement, and identity work among Taylor Swift’s fans, or Swifties. Using thematic analysis within a qualitative case study framework, 55 comments (initiating posts and responses) from five linguistically rich threads filtered by “language learning” were analyzed. Findings highlight Taylor Swift’s lyrics as linguistic artifacts that facilitate vocabulary acquisition, semantic reflection, and cross-linguistic comparisons. Fans engage in discussions that emphasize the emotional and cognitive aspects of language learning, such as deciphering complex lyrics and exploring nuanced vocabulary. Subreddit interactions also encourage cultural interpretation, with fans decoding metaphors, sharing intertextual links, and reflecting on broader cultural narratives. The platform further supports identity work and social bonding, as fans negotiate personal and collective identities, share collaborative learning experiences, and humorously recount misheard lyrics, or mondegreens. These findings provide insights into how Swifties socialize language learning through fandom, contributing to research on affinity spaces and informal language learning in the digital wilds. This study underscores the potential of fandom-driven spaces like Reddit to complement formal education by integrating popular culture, peer interaction, and critical reflection into language learning practices, offering a model for blending informal and formal learning.
