Insights into high-Andean mammal diversity: evidence from camera trapping and surveys in Peru

Abstract

Abstract Wild mammals in the Corani district (Peru), remain poorly documented. This study aimed to document the wild mammal species present in the district and to assess local residents’ perceptions of these animals. Sampling was conducted at eight stations using camera traps, with a total effort of 1,112 trap-days between June 2022 and March 2024. A total of 44 records corresponding to five wild mammal species were obtained: vizcacha, Andean fox, pampas cat, Andean hog-nosed skunk, and taruca (36.4 %, 34.1 %, 11.4 %, 9.1 % and 9.1 % of detections, respectively). Additionally, nine records were attributed to four domestic mammal species (dogs, sheep, llamas, and cattle). We conducted interviews with local participants ( n = 25) to evaluate their ability to identify wild mammal species inhabiting the Peruvian highlands and to understand their perceptions. Participants were able to distinguish all species except the pampas cat and the Andean cat, which were commonly perceived as the male and female of the same species. Furthermore, most species are used in traditional ceremonies or for medicinal purposes by the Quechua community inhabits the Corani district. This study highlights the importance of continuing research in underexplored areas and of incorporating local knowledge into biodiversity assessments.
