The use of social media as a source of journalistic information and its consolidation as part of the digital ecosystem of the media has implied the adoption of terms that were not previously part of its contents. In the specific case of hashtag, this is due to its function as a content classifier and as a marker of the importance of a specific topic –the one designated by the word or phrase written after the # symbol–. This research aims to delve into the use of this anglicism to recognize the factors that influenced its adoption, proliferation, and consolidation as part of the journalistic lexicon. To do this, we expose chronologically the number of news items located per year in three Spanish media –El País, El Mundo, and 20 Minutos–, and present the information through which hashtag was first included in each one, as well as the events or topics that played a role in the dissemination and fixation of the term in the news.
