First coral from the Katian (Upper Ordovician) dolostones of the western Yangtze Platform in South China

Abstract

Katian (Late Ordovician) corals from the Yangtze Platform of South China have only been documented from limestone deposits of the interior region. Here, we describe the first coral (Agetolitoides sp.) from dolostones of the uppermost Taching Formation (uppermost middle Katian) in the Butuo area of southwestern Sichuan on the western margin of the Yangtze Platform. This new fossil indicates a normal marine environment, and supports a post-diagenetic origin of the dolostones in the Taching Formation.
