Abstract

Abstract This chapter gives an overview of the non-harmonic and exceptional aspects of vowel harmony patterns, in which, for example, vowels neither alternate or participate as triggers; are disharmonic or anti-harmonic; vacillate in their behavior; or, exceptionally, trigger harmonization. The classic typology of non-harmonic vowels labels them as neutral, and these neutral vowels are in turn subdivided into either transparent or opaque categories. As will be seen in this chapter, this classification is too simple to describe all systemically and idiosyncratically exceptional vowels. The chapter’s initial typological overview is followed by a discussion of the different types of approaches to these phenomena.
