Practices of digital placemaking: accelerating place attachment

Abstract

Blending placemaking with digital technologies reshapes how people interact with urban spaces. While some argue digital tools can disconnect users from physical environments, others suggest they enhance spatial experiences. This study, grounded in non-dualistic theories of place, examines the impact of the Heritage Trail app at Battersea Power Station on users’ place connections. Using a qualitative case study, visitor interviews before and after app use reveal that digital placemaking integrates physical and digital environments while fostering accelerated place attachment. These findings advance discussions on the role of technology in shaping social relations and urban experiences.
