Abstract

Incest is often considered a universal taboo; however, the manner in which incest is defined and operationalized differs across societies. Despite the presence of the incest taboo, violations of that taboo are not as rare as once thought. Incest can take many different forms and include many different relationship permutations. Many problematic aftereffects are associated with incest, including mental and physical effects. Three forms of incest are discussed herein: father–daughter incest, peer incest, and grandfather–grandchild incest.
