Abstract

In their 2019 Article, Anna Wilkinson and colleagues aimed to assess the effect of a series of tobacco tax increases on the prevalence of smoking in Australia using interrupted time-series analyses for the period 2010–17.1 The authors concluded that the tax increases were effective in reducing smoking prevalence in the general population based on the direction of significant immediate step changes. However, the magnitude of the effects reported fall short of the stated objectives of the Australian Government's tobacco taxation policy, and there was no observed change in the trend of smoking prevalence.
