Significant enhancement in vase performance of cut lisianthus ‘Lucetta’: synergism between nano-silver and sucrose

Abstract

Cut lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) is an appealing and popular multiflorous inflorescence, but its florets and leaves tend to wilt rapidly and quickly lose their freshness. In this study, considering their typical water- and sugar-deficiency symptoms, the potential benefits of vase treatments with nano-silver (NS) and sucrose on improving vase performance of cut lisianthus ‘Lucetta’ were investigated. Compared with the control in deionised water, treatments with 2.0 mg/L NS or 3% sucrose alone could only moderately prolong the vase life of cut lisianthus, whereas the combination treatment of 2.0 mg/L NS and 3% sucrose significantly prolonged their vase life. Additionally, the combination treatment demonstrated notable synergistic effects on the daily opening rate of florets, daily ornamental value, vase solution uptake, and relative fresh weight, markedly enhancing vase performance. Further scanning under an electron microscope revealed that NS treatment and the combination of 2.0 mg/L NS and 3% sucrose effectively reduced bacterial cells and biofilm formation on the stem-end cut surfaces and in the xylem vessels of cut lisianthus in stem-ends, the control in deionised water or the 3% sucrose solution was invaded by a deep layer of bacteria, and the xylem vessels were extensively blocked by a mass of bacteria.
