This work describes the actual development of the German primary standard for particle number concentration. We are presenting the development of a manufacturer-independent method here in this paper. The independency is a necessary step to understand better the measured raw values of particle number sensors for establishing a robust pathway of traceability to the SI unit Ampere. For this purpose, a so-called Faraday Cup Aerosol Electrometer (FCAE) is used as particle sensor together with an Ultrastable Low-noise Current Amplifier (ULCA). Technical challenges are to get an acceptable SNR for measuring small particles (dp ≤ 20 nm) and low particle concentrations (N ≤ 1000 ∙ cm −3 ).
