This is the first volume to examine the fairy tales from the literary estate of Franz Xaver Schönwert (1810–86) from the perspectives of source criticism and genre typology, and regarding the history of their transmission and motifs. While most of the corpus comprises magical fairy tales, it also contains many other fairy tale genres. The texts from Schönwerth’s collection thus shed new light on our understanding of the European folk fairytale.
