Abstract

ABSTRACT Background The selection and fitting of prosthetic components for patients with limb loss or limb difference are complex tasks. Furthermore, the selection of prosthetic components for bone-anchored limbs presents unique challenges compared to traditional socket prostheses. However, it is unclear how prosthesis selection guidelines should differ between these two suspension methods. Objective We explore the factors affecting traditional component selection for socket prostheses that we believe may play a different role for patients with bone-anchored limbs. Additionally, we explore the factors, which we believe uniquely affect patients with bone-anchored limbs, and how these factors may affect the suitability of some prosthetic components for these patients. Conclusions Factors that may have a different impact on prosthesis prescription for patients with sockets and bone-anchored limbs include height & weight, residual limb length, activity level, balance & fall risks, and local access to knowledgeable aftercare. Additionally, consideration of the forces transmitted through the direct skeletal attachment and the addition of failsafe mechanisms are unique factors for patients with bone-anchored limbs and play a major role in prosthetic component selection and alignment. The factors presented here represent gaps in our collective knowledge, which are candidates for more rigorous scientific investigation. Clinical Relevance As the field of osseointegration continues to grow, it is crucial to develop a deeper understanding of these factors to optimize the functional quality of life for patients with bone-anchored limbs. We provide our insights into these factors based on our experience working with these patients.
