The development of digital imaging has profoundly transformed the documentation and study of cultural heritage. Multiband imaging (MBI), based on modified digital cameras, makes it possible to record objects under ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared radiation. These techniques reveal phenomena imperceptible to the naked eye, such as hidden layers, materials, or previous alterations. MBI is applied to a wide range of cultural heritage objects, from paintings and sculptures to manuscripts, textiles, and archaeological materials. Its full potential emerges when different imaging modalities are integrated within a common methodological framework. Far from replacing other examination methods, MBI complements and enriches them. The availability of silicon sensors has played a decisive role in its expansion in professional contexts. This volume provides a conceptual and operational framework that links technical foundations with conservation practice.
