Abstract

Highlights • Micro-computed tomography with artificial-intelligence-assisted segmentation enabled precise 3-dimensional measurements of tympana. • Tympanal surface area scales positively with body size. • Pinna resonance shows no trend with tympanal surface area or thickness. • Species with unilateral pinnae tend to have thicker tympana. • Pinna-covered tympana are larger yet thinner than exposed sides within species.
