The BBNJ Symposium series, launched in Edinburgh in 2023 and continued in Singapore in 2025, and Brazil in 2026 provides a unique independent discussion forum across governments, NGOs, industry, academia and other sectors to advance the implementation of the 2023 UN Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement). This engagement is proving crucial for translating diplomatic momentum into actionable strategies for marine conservation and operational governance. By catalysing policy integration and emphasising the need for the Agreement’s effective implementation, discussions at these symposia focus on enabling mechanisms such as area-based management tools (ABMTs), environmental impact assessments (EIAs), and capacity building and technology transfer (CB&TMT). This multi-stakeholder approach addresses the evolving challenges in international marine policy, underscoring the series’ role in shaping future governance of the high seas.
