Faculty, staff and students of Binghamton University work with the Broome County Food Council to understand how food councils (FCs) in areas with similar socio-economic and health outcomes establish interventions to address food security. As a unique group of scholars, we create a method to identify and describe a comparative set of FCs to provide the BCFC leadership with recommendations for action, demonstrating a model for how academics can lend expertise and resources, rather than serve as experts, to facilitate reciprocal, non-extractive exchanges, extending the possibilities of local efforts.
