(Hassinger-Das et al., 2017). Playful learningas a field of research and practice allows experimentation, being explorative,open-ended, and urging creative collaboration (<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">Holflod, 2022). <span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;mso-ansi-language:EN-US">Play has been used to model a signature pedagogy ofplayful learning in higher education as well (Nørgård, Toft-Nielsen &Whitton, 2017) and the potential of playfulness in the context of adults hasbeen explored in earlier research (Koeners & Francis 2020). Creativity doesnot arise from imagination alone. Rather, it is triggered by various physicalmaterials. This paper focuses on the materiality of adult playfulness andplayful learning in association with simple paper technology—cardboard cubes—in the co-creative contexts of workshops. The paper highlights how ordinarymaterials such as cardboard cubes can be an affordable, accessible, sustainableand therefore valuable alternative to commercial construction systems byoffering a basis for creative play. The paper demonstrates, how creativityworks with simple physical materials, such as theComicubes—a tool for experimentation and playfullearning, and introduces the triad of stuff-mess-wonder as a basis for playfullearning at adult age.
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">
