Abstract This thematic dossier on futures past differs from the numerous studies devoted to Ottoman legacies in that it proposes to examine how historical moments from different periods intertwine in political narratives developed in today’s Turkey. Instead of delineating continuities with and ruptures from the past, it sheds light on ways of being in time. It aims to examine how references to the past and the future have fuelled multiple forms of presentism in post-Ottoman states. It questions the extent to which the replacement of the Kemalist message with Erdoğan’s vision shapes the very ontology of the Turkish state and nation. Raising the question of the use of Kemalism, Erdoğanism and neo-Ottomanism as analytical tools for historians, a futures past perspective proposes to compare these notions in relation to time. Focussing on the 2023 election campaign, the present contribution provides some insights into how the presidential party incorporated the imprints of the history of the Republic of Turkey while projecting signs of the future of “New Turkey”’s future.
