Abstract

This study examines wh-interrogatives in Camuno, an endangered Northern Italian dialect. While similar constructions have been addressed in the literature, our analysis offers a novel contribution by exploring successive-cyclicity, formal feature checking, and the interactions with the LF and PF interfaces. We propose that wh-interrogatives in Camuno form A-bar chains, which spell out distinct formal features at the phase edges. Furthermore, we argue that the clause-internal phasal domain plays a crucial role in these Camuno constructions. Lastly, despite the high degree of variation and optionality observed in wh-questions in the aforementioned dialect, we provide a unified analysis of the different wh-dependencies we observed, by relying on considerations involving syntax and its interfaces with semantics and phonology.
