Abstract

The Canadian materials research community recognizes the urgency to cultivate a compact accelerator-driven neutron source (CANS) research and development program (R&D). This pan-Canadian program will (1) contribute to global neutron beam infrastructure through demonstration of more affordable, yet bright neutron sources that will cut the cost barrier to a new national-scale neutron source; (2) enable Canada’s continued excellence in application of neutron beams to societal issues such as energy production, the environment, manufacturing, and health; (3) enable implementation of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy for clinical treatment of cancer, potentially saving thousands of lives each year; and (4) prepare Canadian industry to compete in an emerging global market for CANS technology.
