Abstract

Since 2013, we have organized an annual Sociology Festival bringing together students, faculty, and local sociologists to share experiences and socialize. This article analyzes the festival as a social experiment based on observations, student‐produced texts and podcasts, and interviews after the 2023 event. Drawing on theories of social interaction, especially Goffman, and research on festivals and fun, we explore how beer, sociology, and student–staff distance create a demanding social situation. This hybridity leads to a re‐keying of the festival frame and “deferential evasion,” by which participants collectively leave early in a way that respects the event's organizers.
