Given increased tourism and scientific interest in the Antarctic, we sought to examine the current state of knowledge surrounding medical evacuation and procedures in Antarctica through a review of the current literature (1990–2023) on medical emergencies and evacuations in the Antarctic. The primary diagnoses leading to hospital admissions or emergency medicine treatment elsewhere in the world are mirrored in Antarctica, emphasizing the universality of medical emergencies. Harassment and mental health issues also emerge as significant concerns, affecting the safety and well-being of researchers. The logistical challenges of evacuating patients from the Antarctic, exacerbated by harsh climatic conditions and limited access to airstrips, necessitate meticulous planning and international cooperation. By investing in medical resources, training, and preventive measures, stakeholders can mitigate the risks associated with medical and psychological emergencies and enhance the resilience of Antarctic communities. The use of emergency medicine simulations may increase the effectiveness and efficiency of in-situ treatment and may lead to cost savings and reduction of risks related to evacuations, and extensive pre-screening might reduce the likelihood for interventions being needed in the first place. Our findings may be useful for policymakers and medical practitioners looking to protect the safety of researchers and tourists in this extreme location.
