Mapping emotions has emerged as a new way of understanding citizens’ perceptions of their urban environments. However, there has been no explicit review of methods for mapping emotions in outdoor built environments. This research conducts a systematic search and review of 53 research studies that have a) defined methods of mapping emotions, b) conducted pilot studies to use the methods, and c) conducted in the past two decades. This paper categorises emotion mapping methods into broadly three types: subjective methods, objective methods, and crowdsourcing social media data, wherein some studies have explored the integration of the above-defined methods. A comparative analysis of the reviewed methods reveals each method’s methodological advantages and limitations. Research indicates that emotions have subjective/cognitive, physiological, and behavioural components. On critical reflection, an association between these components of emotions and emotion mapping methods is established. Building on this association, importance is laid on the integration of multiple methods in emotion mapping as it can create a holistic understanding of citizens’ emotions concerning their built environment. Additionally, the study highlights the relevance of culture as a significant aspect in the process of emotion mapping and their consideration in emotion mapping methods as a way forward.
