Trans* children are under-represented in children’s and young adult literature. When teaching about human rights, it’s important to emphasise the dignity of the child and protect them from discrimination and stigmatisation. If readers have relevant texts, they can engage and identify with trans* characters and develop empathy. Some may find themselves represented through trans* characters, identify role models and come to terms with their own identities. All may encounter themes that resonate and help avoid marginalisation, stigmatisation and discrimination. This analysis of trans* in human rights education uses three books. It shows how literature variously negotiates trans* identity in terms of content, language and aesthetics. The analysis identifies consistent links between the novels and children’s rights. The article concludes that using literature to address discrimination against trans* people may sensitise all pupils to human rights and social justice, highlighting how teacher attitudes are a key element in achieving this.
