Extended Reality (XR) technologies, encompassing Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR), have rapidly evolved from niche applications to transformative tools across multiple industries. This systematic review examines the prevalent use cases and industry disruptions associated with XR by synthesising findings from 155 peer-reviewed studies published between 2013 and 2023. Using PRISMA guidelines, we conducted an exhaustive search of the Scopus database, identifying key trends, leading sectors, and emerging areas of application. The analysis reveals that healthcare, education, and manufacturing sectors are at the forefront of XR adoption, with data visualisation, education & training, and simulation emerging as dominant use cases. This review highlights the significant growth of XR research during the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring its relevance in digital and remote operations. However, gaps remain in the exploration of practical applications in sectors like transportation, public administration, and utilities. The findings suggest that XR’s role in transforming industries is only beginning, with further research required to fully harness its potential in underrepresented areas. This study serves as a roadmap for future XR research, encouraging deeper exploration into sector-specific applications and interdisciplinary collaboration to maximise XR’s global impact.
