The analysis of the June 2024 European Parliament elections offers a unique opportunity to assess the current wave of populism across all 27 EU member states simultaneously. With elections occurring concurrently, this wave of pan-European populism can be examined more closely and comparatively, evaluating its scale, dynamics, and impact on national politics and, ultimately, on the EU. This report by the European Center for Populism Studies (ECPS) thus examines the electoral performance and influence of populist parties in the 2024 European elections. Drawing on country-specific analyses by local experts, the report assesses populist party performance across all EU member states and discusses the challenges populist politics pose for European institutions and the future of Europe. The ECPS report highlights the diversity of populism and its varied manifestations across the political spectrum. Current trends show an increasing mainstreaming and normalization of populist parties due to a dual process: populist parties’ modernization and moderation, alongside the accommodation of populist ideas and policies by mainstream parties. The report notes that the modernization of populist politics includes the moderation and blurring of their positions on European integration, aiming to attract moderate and pro-EU voters and foster collaboration with mainstream parties.
