From 1252-1256, the pope was both an actor and a stake in the controversy. He was as much a partisan as he was taken to task. Congar said it: such is the ecclesiological stake of the Controversy. Antifraternalism cannot be thought of without antipapalism. At the time of the Great Schism (1378-1417) and of the obediential tears in Christendom between the two popes, one in Rome and the other in Avignon, antipapalism, more than ever, was on fire. Antifraternalism, especially the Dominican one, seems then, in this context, to invite itself into the major debates proper to the fifteenth century in order to merge with antipontificalism. The fusion of the two polemics has amplified the force of their argumentation and the diffraction of the antifraternalistic motive penetrates from now on all the major polemics of the century and those to come.
