Abstract

The way one understands a symbol is strongly dependent on our own background, whether it is determined by our culture or developed through our research. This factor requires to question the value of perceptions, especially when they are the basis of historical discourse. This paper offers a case study by addressing the various issues surrounding the research about the double axe, a Minoan motif whose significance remains relatively obscure. By approaching the study of the double axe through the prism of recent work on the concept of «cultural icon », this paper aims to provide some insights into the conflicting relationship between the historian’s eye and images that are unknown to them.
