When the main Mousterian assemblage of Grotte du Figuier was first studied, it was defined as "La Quina-type Mousterian ". The site became a regional reference especially as its original features led to the hypothesis of the existence of an Eastern Rhone Valley fades. A new study of a bigger assemblage from the two Mousterian levels of the site allows a new more detailed view of this lithic industry to be proposed. The reality of a Rhone Valley La Quina facie s for this kind of assemblage is debatable. They certainly have original features compared with those in south-western France, but they are rare and varied in the region. They could just as well be due to short occupation periods exploiting the local environment and varying according to the kind of sites and the environmental conditions.
